No one likes a counterfeit product. It is so annoying if you buy something on eBay and the designer label is hanging off. No one wants a fake speaker either.

talk 5

Some speakers may try to sound like someone they admire instead of being themselves, just be you. You are an original, not a photocopy…I saw that quote online somewhere.

I think imitate some good parts of great speakers like Obama, Martin Luther King, Judi Dench and The Rock to name but a few but still be you, sound like you, use words that you know and jokes that your audience will laugh at too.

Connect with a story to help your audience relate to you, see why you are relevant for what you are going to share. As an example, I saw Tony Robbins once at a conference and he talked about when he only had a few dollars in his wallet, paid for a boy to go to lunch with his mum and now he is rolling in it after years of hard work etc.

talk 1

To get a person’s ears and attention you got to go for the heart and their emotions.

Forget about it if you are going to list of numbers, stats and infor…who cares. “. “Be clear about what you want the audience to walk away with when they leave and use that as a structure to frame your talk.”  Give your listeners what they want to hear.

talk 8

Do you sound interesting? Your passion for a topic can draw people in; talking without any enthusiasm for the topic can kill the vibe in the room and shut down your message with your audience more interested in posting on twitter.

When you give the talk try to persuade and not just chuck info at your listeners.

I am excited to see you improve in this area. Don’t forget the next part is out next week, so stay tuned.

Tips to create a Ted Talk part 2 of 4 : Keep it simple

KISS for me…Keep it simple for me.

Only because you know the topic in detail it does not mean that your audience does, remember that.  Imagine you are going to talk to someone about making chicken and rice, first may start off with telling them to buy chicken and then season it up first.

talk 3

Make sure that your talk leaves your listeners informed and with a plan of how to get more knowledge. Pretend you are going to give the talk to your 5-year-old nephew.

talk 9

It is not your chance to flood all your knowledge and degrees in a 30-45 minutes talk, given them what they need not all that you know.

I am excited to see you improve in this area. Don’t forget the next part is out next week, so stay tuned.

So who are you talking to? Do you know your audience? Are they men, women, peers, parents, got money, stressed, business owners etc?

talk 4

Keep in mind your audience in mind when creating a speech.  What do they want and need to hear? Knowing who you are speaking to will help you fine tune the talk and will help keep the audience stay engaged and not float off on their phone checking out Instagram.
