Stop talking & just listen to me?

When talking to strangers it can be a bit hard knowing what to say, when and how at times.

But let me give you a tip my friend; If you don’t know what to say in a conversation, try simply reflecting back what you hear from the other person.

If a new friend at work is upset about a project going wrong, say something like “It sounds like you are really upset about your feedback on that project, paraphrase what they said about their thoughts & feelings about the project.”   If needed then suggest “what things can I help you with?”

Often people simply want to know that their feelings are acknowledged rather than be offered solutions to their problems.

Doing so also relieves you of the pressure of trying to think of what to say next.

No one likes a counterfeit product. It is so annoying if you buy something on eBay and the designer label is hanging off. No one wants a fake speaker either.

talk 5

Some speakers may try to sound like someone they admire instead of being themselves, just be you. You are an original, not a photocopy…I saw that quote online somewhere.

obama

I think imitate some good parts of great speakers like Obama, Martin Luther King, Judi Dench and The Rock to name but a few but still be you, sound like you, use words that you know and jokes that your audience will laugh at too.

KISS for me…Keep it simple for me.

Only because you know the topic in detail it does not mean that your audience does, remember that.  Imagine you are going to talk to someone about making chicken and rice, first may start off with telling them to buy chicken and then season it up first.

talk 3

Make sure that your talk leaves your listeners informed and with a plan of how to get more knowledge. Pretend you are going to give the talk to your 5-year-old nephew.

talk 9

It is not your chance to flood all your knowledge and degrees in a 30-45 minutes talk, given them what they need not all that you know.

So who are you talking to? Do you know your audience? Are they men, women, peers, parents, got money, stressed, business owners etc?

talk 4

Keep in mind your audience in mind when creating a speech.  What do they want and need to hear? Knowing who you are speaking to will help you fine tune the talk and will help keep the audience stay engaged and not float off on their phone checking out Instagram.

How to say no part 4 of 4 : Use No + because

I love listening to loads of different voices, listening to the tones, sounds and uniqueness of our voice.

Podcast: https://anchor.fm/leighannes-voice

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCehL5ORpvJh4FJIWoRaIg2w

This is Part  4 of 4.

Let’s jump in here.

Sometimes you might need to use no+ because to help the person who asked you about something to understand why you said no.

why

The word ‘because’  helps people to agree with you (even if the reason you give them is a load of nonsense).

So instead of just saying, ‘Nah sorry, I won’t be able to help you plan your wedding or baby shower’, try adding a reason (even if it is a bit lame) to help your no go down a bit sweeter like honey.

How to say no part 3 of 4: Do not be afraid to say no twice

I love listening to loads of different voices, listening to the tones, sounds and uniqueness of our voice.

Podcast: https://anchor.fm/leighannes-voice

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCehL5ORpvJh4FJIWoRaIg2w

This is Part  3 of 4.

Let’s jump in here.

Don’t be scared to say no and even if you have to say it twice. Just do it. You have boundaries right?

Not everyone can come to your house or eat the food in your fridge can they? So with your time feel free to protect it by saying no.

no 5

Just because someone is persistent, doesn’t mean you have to give in. Nod your head, make it look lie you are listening, smile politely, and say no a second time, just more firmly than the first.

The Sound of your Voice is like cake part…let me explain part 2

The Sound of your voice is like a cake…let me explain

part 2

Question: How can you improve your speaking voice?

I based this podcast and blog on my page www.leighannesvoice/news on this article here, go ahead and read or listen to part 1.

https://www.ethos3.com/2014/07/your-guide-to-developing-a-stronger-speaking-voice/

How To Practice

After recording and re-listening to your presentation, you will probably start to notice weak spots.

to,improve:

Relax – Start by yawning, wiggling your jaw, humming, and inhaling a large breath for 15 seconds, then release for another 15. Remember all of those stages of vocal production? Most parts of those can be gently warmed up before you practice.

Vocal Exercises – Are you a terrible singer? It doesn’t matter, vocal warm ups are still for you. This can help you enhance projection, work on clarity, and improve breathing techniques. Here is a video of one musical vocal exercise that might turn you into the next Mariah Carey:

Reading Aloud – This can help strengthen your pitch as well as your vocal clarity; start by picking a tricky passage and then adding as much “zest” or variation in your pitch as possible while you read it.

Strength Training – Looking to push it to the limit when it comes to improving your speaking voice? The power of science can back you up. This set of exercises includes everything from a hissing noise practice to saying “ney” at all volumes.

Put A Book On It – To practice mindful breathing techniques, lay down flat on the floor and place a heavy book on your abdomen. Sound crazy? This will help you become more aware as you breath with your stomach, teaching you to control those pesky muscles.

Since the voice is heavily influenced by outside factors, be sure that you take excellent care of your throat, lungs, and vocal chords before your presentation.

Mindful practice is the key to improving your speaking voice.
