When is it ok to have pauses & silences in a conversation with a stranger?

Not all situations call for conversation. While it is true that lots of talk among friends builds friendship, if you find yourself in public settings with strangers, talking isn’t always necessary.

 

The person on the bus or plane next to you might not be interested in making small talk the whole trip—and that’s perfectly fine. If the other person gives a lot of one-word responses, folds his or her arms, or leans away, those are signals that he or she may prefer just to stay quiet.

 

If someone is using up all your time and won’t let you end the conversation, use an excuse such as needing to get another drink, as a reason for exiting.

Ask questions to find out more?

I find asking questions in conversations with strangers helps to move the chat along a bit and clarify things too. 

 

If you know that you will be in a situation where you will be talking to strangers, try to plan at least three open-ended “go-to” questions (that start with “how” or “what”) that you can use if you get into an awkward conversation. 

 

Don’t struggle too hard with these either. Something simple like, “So, what’s keeping you busy these days?” will work.

 

Just be careful not to ask too many questions in a row, or you may come across like Jessica Flecther in murder she wrote.

Do you find it easy to talk to strangers? Shoe In Technique

The best advice for starting a conversation is actually quite simple—focus on the other person or say something light-hearted. People love talking about themselves.

Comment on Something Personal

Often, the person with whom you are trying to start a conversation will have some unique aspect of themselves. Perhaps it is an item of jewellery, an unusual shirt, or maybe even a tattoo; something distinctive that tells a story about the person. Items like this give you a starting point for conversation.

 

Say something like:

  • Love your hair… is it from Ali Express?

 

  • Girl where did you get them shoes from?

 

Be sure to avoid anything too intimate as a starting point or you’re likely to offend the other person. 

After you receive a response, have something else to say that will give you a common platform on which to build a conversation and a relationship.

Remember, the goal is not to say the perfect thing or come across a certain way, but to open the door for more conversation.

Tips to create a Ted Talk Part 3 of 4: Connect not just throw Content

Connect with a story to help your audience relate to you, see why you are relevant for what you are going to share. As an example, I saw Tony Robbins once at a conference and he talked about when he only had a few dollars in his wallet, paid for a boy to go to lunch with his mum and now he is rolling in it after years of hard work etc.

To get a person’s ears and attention you got to go for the heart and their emotions. 

Forget about it if you are going to list of numbers, stats and infor…who cares. “. “Be clear about what you want the audience to walk away with when they leave and use that as a structure to frame your talk.”  Give your listeners what they want to hear.

Do you sound interesting? Your passion for a topic can draw people in; talking without any enthusiasm for the topic can kill the vibe in the room and shut down your message with your audience more interested in posting on twitter. 

When you give the talk try to persuade and not just chuck info at your listeners.

No one likes a rambler or a broken record do they? When you say no it might make a further muddy escape from the situation and you give your listener more ammunition to convince you otherwise.

If you give reason upon the reason of your ‘no’ too much, it can seem like you’re lying – or worse still, it can allow the asker to find a way to ground you down and make you say yes.

Handshake

Your handshake it needs to be strong firm, don’t squeeze or crack someone’s knuckles but make sure you give a firm shake with good eye contact at the same time.  If you don’t know how to shake hands properly, then learn with your friends and family.

Smile and look your interviews in the eye and they’re going to smile back. Make sure you keep smiling throughout the whole interview because you know what smiling does? Nope, let me tell you, it raises the tone and brings a joyful sound into your voice.

  • Use the S.T.A.R technique

 

When you’re in the interview people often use the star competency interview technique to interview and it’s basically a tool to help them gain an understanding of who you are, what you can do and how are you going to fit in the team. 

 

S: situation 

T:  task 

A: action 

R: result

So when you answer the questions, always respond in the order of this technique. So you might say that the situation was there was no water in the office due to a strike. So the task was to get water into the building. Then an action you personal took was to get a shopping trolley and buy 5x big bottles of water and the result was none of the team were dehydrated on a hot summer’s day.

Ok so getting ready to nail your next interview just by speaking effectively it’s not just by speaking though.  It’s also, how you dress, like make sure that you look appropriate for the industry going into to. So if you going into a fashion house, look like a trendsetter or in a bank then wear a sharp suit.

Ask questions 

When you’re going for an interview you need to make sure that you’re prepared with engaging questions to make it look like you want the job.  Try to prepare stuff like:

  • What are the opportunities for promotion?
  • How can I implement new innovation?
  • What are the multi-agency working opportunities? 
  • When will I be notified if I’m successful,
  • How will I be notified, 
  • When does this role start 
  • Is there going to be a chance of a handover with the person leave him
  • How many people will I be working with 
  • What training is offered 
  • What floor will I be located on 
  • What are the company benefits 
  • What’s the dress code what are the hours 
  • What are the times for x?

 

As you can see the list goes on and on the list goes on and on and on as you see.

  • Thank you note

 

Send a handwritten thank you note or card to the person who interviewed you. Make sure you’re nice you speak and encouraging to everyone.  Leave a good impression the moment you come in and when you leave because the interviewer may even go and ask the person who’s bringing you into the interview room.  So you don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot just by being rude to someone.

Podcaster Tips 6 to 10 (part Two)

This is part two of my 10 tips on how to improve your podcasting skills  so that people listen to what you say rather than just all of the mistakes or how you’re saying it wrong this is part 1 of 2 podcasting tips.  I left the links below to catch up on what you might have missed.

  • Your mood or personality 

 

If you are feeling sad,down or tearful… these vibes can come through your voice. So you might need to give yourself a pep talk to get livo and do star jumps or something so you can be at your most hyper energy. 

 

 

 

  • Flaunt your storytelling skills

 

Engage your listeners with great relatable stories , what you learnt or what you will start or stop doing since the experiment

  • Relax

 

Free flow and sound like you are talking to your friends and family.

 

A great speaker doesn’t memorise their speech or constantly think about what they’re going to say next. They’re paying attention to the audience. They’re feeling themselves in the moment. They are completely focused on the task at hand.

  • Know your stuff with passion or when you don’t know say it too

 

So obviously you have a huge following because you know your stuff, got passion for it and keep it real.

 

 

  • Use a shield to reduce plosives

 

There is no way around it the Ps or Bs are always going to hit the mic hard. A way to reduce this is to use a mic shield, drink water to lubricate your mouth and when you are saying words like please,  boss, pleasant etc move your mouth slightly off the mic to reduce the plosive impact.

 

You can do it.

The choice is huge for listeners right now , everyone has a podcast now,  it is more unusual when people do not have a pod.

Ok so some tips if you are a podcaster or thinking of starting one. Let me give you some tips to keep your listeners tuned in rather than turned off by your voice.

 

Tips

 

  • Slow down when speaking 

 

The way you speak to your friends,  family or over the phone can often be much faster than the speed for a podcast. 

Slow down, let the listeners enjoy what you say and how you say. 

 

 

  • Use defined pauses to create interests,  or a powerful point 

 

Now don’t feel pressured to fill all the talking time with talking yaaaaaay. The silences can often speak more than your words.

  • How loud do your speak

 

Your voice volume is key to your audience listening and staying to listen to the whole podcast.

 

  1. Do you sound interesting  …have you got rhythm to your voice. 

 

 

  • What is the breathing like

 

 Your breathing controls how you sound. Have you ever tried talking while running fast out on the treadmill or after you walked up 4 flights of stairs. Sound breathy right, control your breathing so you can sound energetic through the whole talk.
